Stranger Things: The New Netflix Show You Need To Watch

Netflix has come into their own in terms of original content. Since House of Cards exploded (their first major series to really cause a stir) the streaming service has been giving dedicated binge-watchers a viewing experience of quality and they are showing no signs of slowing down. This week, their brand new series Stranger Things – quite a comeback for Winona Ryder – has everyone talking and for good reason – the series is brilliant. Read below for a few reasons why this show might just become your new Netflix obsession.

Set in 1983 in a small Indiana town, Stranger Things crosses a multitude of genres to combine horror, science-fiction, and coming-of-age drama, with moments of laughter thrown in. ?It all starts quite simply, when a young boy named Will disappears on his way home. At the same time, a mysterious girl known as Eleven arrives in town. These are the two incidents that appear to be linked but this time, the adults don’t have much luck solving the mystery, so it’s up to the children (who are desperate to find their friend) of the town to do some investigating. And so begins the supernatural horror, twists and turns and moments of surprise we won’t spoil for you. It’s a show that has it all; much like a variation of Twin Peaks, it is atmospheric and engaging.

At the same time, Will’s mother, Joyce (Winona Ryder), and older brother, Jonathan, are trying to find him and discover?that all is not what it seems in their town; soon strange and incredible events begin to take place.

And the show doesn’t just contain an intriguing?plot; the characters are wonderful, particularly the children. From the start, you form a bond with them; you fear for them, fight for them and walk (and run) with them and want to see them to the end. Yes, Ryder shines in her role, but it’s the young actors who steal the show.

Much has also been said of the nostalgic element that runs throughout, this show that so lovingly pays homage to all the classic, magical films of the eighties. Remember ET, Gremlins, Back to the Future and The Goonies, and Stand by Me? Stranger Things has tapped into that magic, kids going on an adventure filled with danger and excitement. And even while wearing its influences on its sleeves, the series doesn’t feel rehashed or trite, instead, it has its own compelling story to tell.

This is a show well worth binge-watching on Netflix this weekend as a second season has just been announced.
