Scientists Have Found A Link Between Sleep And Happiness

Scientists have discovered a link between sleep and happiness and we don’t need any more convincing.


I can go a day without eating or drinking (if my life depended on it, not by choice), but what I cannot live without is sleep. Yes; I was first to fall asleep at sleepovers when I was younger, I’m usually first to fall asleep after a night out, and you can bet that a perfect day for me includes a 15-minute disco-nap during the day. Sleep is my key to happiness, and this new study suggests that taking naps could be your key to happiness too.

The study was conducted for the Edinburgh International Science Festival, which saw 1,000 participants answer psychological questions in an online survey which asked for details of napping habits.

Results of this new research, conducted by Professor Richard Wiseman, from the University of Hertfordshire,’revealed that those who took a brief daytime snooze had an average score of 3.67 on a five-point scale, while non-nap-takers scored 3.52 and long-nappers 3.44. According to The Independent, the study also’showed that 66% of short nappers reported feeling happy compared with 56 per cent of long nappers, highlighting a significant association between short naps and an improved sense of wellbeing.

“Previous research has shown that naps of under 30 minutes make you more focused, productive and creative,” said Professor?Wiseman “these new findings suggest the tantalising possibility that you can also become happier by just taking a short nap”, he continued.

Sleeping boasts a huge range of benefits for?our bodies and minds and can have a profound effect on our mood, pain threshold, weight, libido, and helps us to think clearer. What’s more; people who sleep more tend to be more intelligent and creative, and most importantly, it’s free!
