Two new hangouts mark the birth of a hipster haven…
Blackbird
The latest watering hole to open just south of the Canal makes quite the impression. Whether it’s the rubber ducks painted on the walls or the glass room (inspired by the office in Brad Pitt flick Se7en), Blackbird certainly stands out. What used to be the aul? Rathmines Inn has been given a massive face-lift by the brains behind hipster faves Cassidy’s and P. Mac’s and their influence is clear to see. Along with featuring all the quirks you’ve come to know and love from its older siblings – such as mismatched antique furniture, board games and free Meanies – Blackbird sports an impressive outdoor seating area, making it the perfect summertime haunt. With whispers of weekly barbecues kicking off soon, 30 craft beers on offer and a great atmosphere, it’s definitely top of our silly-season list.
Martcade
Is it Berlin? Maybe Amsterdam? Believe it or not, this eclectic new caf? is actually set in the Georgian surroundings of Rathmines. The Martcade is the latest addition to the Mart arts centre and its Euro-cool d?cor makes it the perfect laid-back space for creative types and hungry city slickers alike. During the day it serves quality grub, coffee and juices and for night revellers there are BYOB evenings, acoustic sets, comedy gigs and spoken-word evenings all in the pipeline. Check out their comfy cushion-filled bath tubs – now, how have we never thought of that before?
