Eight movies to watch with your dad this Father’s Day

Ah, Father’s Day. The only day of the year (besides his birthday) where we’ll happily let our dad choose the film. Before you pass him the remote, though, why not impress him by choosing a father-favourite yourself? Whether he’s into action; comedy; drama or wartime films; there’s something out there for you to enjoy too. Here we’ve listed eight of our favourite movies to watch with the main man himself:

Taken (2008)

It’s an oldie, but it’s a goodie. Watch Liam Neeson’s character, Bryan Mills, threaten his daughter’s kidnappers with the ultimate cool-dad speech. He then flies to Paris to save her himself. If your father is a fan of action movies, this one can’t be missed.

Die Hard (1988)

With action scenes for him, some romance for you, watch as John McClane gets caught in a war with terrorists. Starring movie legends Bruce Willis and the late Alan Rickman, this is the type of film you can rewatch over and over (whether it’s Father’s Day or not).

The Intern (2015)

If your dad isn’t keen on action flicks but enjoys a good comedy, check out The Intern starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway. A 70-year-old man is hired as an intern in a busy online sales company. Diving into the tech world he once avoided, De Niro’s character develops a father/daughter bond with his boss. It’s funny, heart-warming and thought-provoking all at once.

Adam & Paul (2004)

Is your dad a fan of Irish comedy? Pop on Adam & Paul, a film about two drug addicts from Dublin on the hunt for their next fix. While the film is packed with humour, it has dark elements too. You and your dad will be hooked from start to finish.

Groundhog Day (1993)

This is another timeless classic that, excuse the pun, you can watch again and again. Bill Murray plays the role of Phil Connors, a TV weatherman whose life is caught on a time loop. He relives the same day over, and over, but how can he explain this to the people he loves?

Dunkirk (2017)

Written, directed, and co-produced by Christopher Nolan, this war-time film documents the Dunkirk evacuation during World War II. The cinematography, cast, and action sequences are all so exceptional it was nominated for eight Academy Awards. Plus, with an all-star cast (including Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy and Harry Styles), it’s definitely one worth watching.

The Terminal (2004)

There’s not a single Tom Hanks film you can’t watch with your dad on Father’s Day, but The Terminal is one of our favourites. The Oscar-winner plays an Eastern European man who becomes stuck in New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport because of political fallout in his home country. He cannot enter America, nor can he return home. Viktor Navorski must learn to speak English and make friends in his new, unlikely home.

As Good As It Gets (1997)

Think your dad is fussy and grumpy? Watch Jack Nicholson come to terms with his new neighbours. Starring alongside Helen Hunt, he’s funny; intense; and loveable. You and your dad will love it.
