Mid-term has arrived, and we’re ready for these family-friendly events this weekend

We’re into our first mid-term break of the year, but don’t let the weather put a dampener on your plans. There’s so much to do around the country to kick off the week, that Storm Dennis couldn’t even blow out. Round the kids up and get booking. Happy weekend from IMAGE!

All weekend: Take the pups to see some pups at the Seal Rescue Centre in Courtown, Co. Wexford

The Seal Rescue Centre is open seven days a week for free tours from 10 am to 6 pm. They rehabilitate 60-80 seals a year, that you are able to see up close. You can meet the seal pups, learn stories and check out their gift shop, with no need to book ahead.

All weekend: Get a grá for nature at the Eagles Flying centre in Ballymote

If you have a love for wildlife, a visit to Eagles Flying is a great day out, no matter what the weather. Nestled in Ballymote, south of Sligo, the centre is currently the home of more than 100 eagles, hawks, owls, falcons and vultures. There is also a large supervised Petting Zoo, with Rosie the 350 kg pig; Grizzly, the raccoon (who is a gifted pickpocket); Tui and Allan, the tame foxes and Monty, the 4-metre python. Shows start at 11 am and 3 pm every day and cost €35.90 for a family of four.

Saturday and Sunday: Enjoy some Midterm tales at Glasnevin Cemetery

A trip to the graveyard is hardly a morbid affair when it’s to Glasnevin’s dedicated midterm tales this weekend. Kicking off at 11 am on both Saturday and Sunday, guests will be treated to a tour of Glasnevin cemetery, with highlights such as tales of grave-robbing, sick parrots, and Maria Higgins, the only woman who has ever been buried in Glasnevin twice. Tickets are €7.50 per person, and can be booked online.

Saturday: Become a Stone Age artist at the Sásta! event at Kerry County Museum

If you think you have a budding artist in the house, make sure you make time tomorrow to visit the Kerry County Museum for this drop-in workshop. Little ones can try their hand at recreating stone art and wall paintings, in 30-minute sessions taking place all day from 10am until 4:30 pm. €5 per adult and kids go free, which also covers entry to all of the museum’s exhibits.
