Keira Knightley’s Broadway Debut Didn’t Quite Go As Planned

Even in the world of celebrity, there is no guarantee that those big moments in life are going to come off like they should. Remember when JLaw tripped going up to grab her Oscar? Or when Emma Thompson lost her shoe at the Golden Globes? Stuff happens. Only when you’re in the public eye, those morto moments are usually caught on camera and remain on the web for the rest of time.

Actress Keira Knightley is the latest famous figure to have been made a show of, during one such big moment. Famous for her movie work, the Anna Karenina star was all geared up for her anticipated Broadway debut in Th?r’se Raquin, in which she plays the title role, when things took an odd turn minutes after the show started.

Knightley was on stage with fellow actor Gabriel Ebert when a disturbance took place. A man in the mezzanine got up from his seat and made his way to the railing and began to shout various oddities in the direction of the stage. This reportedly caused general confusion as audience members wondered if this too was part of the act. It wasn’t, and it became visibly clear the shouting was directed at Knightley and as this persisted and became worse, the ?fan? had to be forcibly removed, but not before throwing an bouquet of flowers on stage and finishing with a predictable ?will you marry me? comment to Knightley.

However, like the seasoned pro she is Knightley remained in character during the whole thing and after a short intermission, the show went on as normal. We’d have been suitably mortified. Anyone who has had any sort of embarrassing moments during their school play days (for example) will relate.

Since the news emerged of the Broadway disturbance, one or two reports have suggested that this may have all been done as part of some weird publicity machine to hype up Knightley’s debut (which has worked), and in the land of celebrity anything is possible. Bizarrely, the incident occurred at Broadway’s Studio 54 Theater, the same location where actor Shia LaBeouf drunkenly interrupted a performance of Cabaret last year.

However, hopefully, Knightley can forget the incident and focus on the play as it could really take her career up another notch. Many actors such as Emma Stone and Elizabeth Olsen have achieved great success and acclaim on the stage, and Knightley will no doubt be hoping that this will be the case for her. Time will tell.
