Small but airy, cool and uncluttered, landscape and floral designer Mark Grehan‘s homely city pad effortlessly mixes modern touches and quirky vintage finds. He’s part of a new batch of Dubliners looking to create a cosy nest in the city. The well-designed apartment in Dublin 8 was bought in 2004 and boasts a generous roof terrace, where Mark created an enviable lush urban garden. Filled with low-maintenance succulents and hardy perennials, as well as tall grasses and shrubs, it gives the place the warmth and vitality usually hard to create in a modern apartment. Simple industrial furniture is brought to life by unique retrowares sourced mainly from the nearby Dublin Flea Market and Oxfam Home, and the inexpensive but dazzling flower arrangements dotting the apartment. While the background is kept cool and sober in hues of grey and blue, colourful soft furnishings warm up the dark shell.

His tops tips for a striking but relaxed style? Avoid overcrowding the space, keep it airy but make it warm and inviting; add splashes of colour and fill it with greenery and flowers. ?You don’t have to spend much, and they bring in so much life, colour, texture.? And he’s not just saying that because he’s a florist.
