How Often Should You Wash Your Bra?

How Often Should You Wash Your Bra?

Are you fond of lashing your best bra into the wash after every wear? You’re probably not the only one; we’ve all done it. However, according to a new study, washing it too often can actually damage your breasts.

Step away from that washing machine ladies. According to the experts, ?every few wears,? (one wash after say four wears), will do the trick, unless of course you’ve been sweating up a storm at your latest TRX session at the gym. No one will expect you to wear a sweaty bra (that’s a bit gross).

So, washing your bra once every four wears? We’re not sure how we feel about that!

ICYMI: 1/4 Skip Brushing Their Teeth

Over-washing can damage the elasticity, which is essential for providing the proper support,” explains Lexie Sachs, product analyst in the Textiles Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute. It just means that if the elasticity in the bras is damaged, your breasts won’t get the support they need and are prone to sagging. Not good!

Having several bras to wear on rotation is also recommended, so they don’t get overly worn. This doesn’t mean you have to dash to the shops to buy a new bra for every day of the week, just that it’s better to wear more than one. Sachs added that taking it off at night should allow plenty of time for it to recover its shape and elasticity, but if you do wear it for an extra day or two, it won’t make a massive difference.

The study also says that just storing and washing your bras correctly can make every bit of difference. ?If you decide to wash a bra in the machine instead of the sink, select the most delicate cycle your washer offers, ” she explained. “And I’d recommend a special mesh bra bag. They cushion the bra and keep it from twisting and tangling.”
