Hate-following, hate-watching and hate-eating: it’s all love on The Spill

Have you ever had one of those days that screamed for a wine and chats sesh with your girlfriends? Enter Image.ie’s podcast, The Spill. The Spill is hosted by our very own self-proclaimed agony aunts Sophie White and Rhona McAuliffe. With a mix of discussion on current affairs, arts and culture and some healthy advice to our listeners, it’s the best place to unwind and deliberate the issues affecting Irish women today.

We’ve reached the end of season one of The Spill, and what a season it’s been. Sophie and Rhona have talked about everything from locker-room talk to loneliness, bi-curiosity and Botox, ableism, sustainability and so much more. There’s been some deep discussions, plenty of laughs and always a lot of great points, and we’re already looking forward to season two.

But first, we’ve got the last episode of season one to listen to, and it’s a good one. In characteristically chipper fashion, Sophie and Rhona’s topic of choice is hate. Specifically, why we, as people, love to indulge in the pleasure of hating something. Whether it’s hate-watching that godawful series on TV, hate-following that blogger that you just can’t stand or even hate-eating (Sophie explains it all), the way that we love to hate is an odd phenomenon to say the least. Why do we love such a negative feeling? Why do we return to binging on it, again and again? Sophie and Rhona (very funnily) go through their own pet hates, and discuss what exactly makes up the emotion.

With all the hate-talk, our hosts are, as always, discussing their art and culture picks of the week, and have including plenty of great ones to keep listeners tided over until season two drops soon. And, as is tradition, they begin the show with discussing what they’ve been reading and thinking about this week — starting with The Cut’s Sex Diaries, which Sophie still hasn’t hopped on the bandwagon of. She’s in for a treat.

This week’s new episode, and all the others you might have missed, are available here:
