attends the "Girls" season four series premiere at American Museum of Natural History on January 5, 2015 in New York City.
Girls, the show that sparked a thousand op-eds on that species known as the millennial, will be wrapping up in 2017 after its sixth season, The Hollywood Reporter claims. The HBO’s show’s fifth season will air stateside this February.
This news isn’t exactly shocking, although HBO have so far declined to comment. The show’s co-creator Lena Dunham has hinted in interviews that she doesn’t envisage the show sticking around much longer. Dunham started working on the show while in her early twenties and is approaching 30 now. It makes sense for her to want to move on. She’s also got a host of other projects on her plate. Besides producing other shows, Dunham writes, edits a popular newsletter and is dipping her capable feet into podcasting. She sees new horizons. And she’s not a fan of shows lingering. ?I think America has a tendency to push shows past their due dates. I like the British model – in and out,? she told Variety last year.
Dunham has even speculated about doing a movie years after the ending of the show, to see how the characters fare.
Dunham’s writing partner and Girls co-creator Jenni Konner has also spoken about finishing the series. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter she was very uncryptic about her intentions: ?Maybe it’s just one more year, maybe we wrap it up in six. It all depends. But also we’re not in the business of running it into the ground. We would like to end in a graceful place. And we’d like to tell a complete story. What that means is that we really have to start building towards an end soon, creatively.?
We can see why this decision makes sense. The show is about young women finding their place in the world, and it’d be somewhat depressing if the characters never graduated to some semblance of maturity. Stories need a conclusion. Our only real sorrow at this news is that we’ll have to say goodbye to Adam Driver’s character Adam. It was a beautiful regular serving of handsome from the Star Wars actor. *blesses self*
