Dr. Tony Holohan to be awarded the Freedom of Dublin City

Tributes to Dr. Holohan were widespread last week, after he revealed he would be stepping back from his position

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan will be awarded the Honorary Freedom of Dublin City.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Hazel Chu, who was just elected last week, put forward Dr. Holohan for the honour at Dublin City Council’s monthly meeting, with the decision ratified yesterday evening.

Speaking on Twitter,  Lord Mayor Chu said it was “an honour” to propose Dr. Holohan for the award. “He has been a constant presence in our lives during Covid19 and his calm manner in imparting advice gave reassurance to us all,” she said.

Dr. Holohan served as Chief Medical Officer to the country during the coronavirus pandemic, and announced last week he would be taking some time away from this position to be with his family, as his wife had been recently taken into palliative care due to her cancer.

Tributes to Dr. Holohan poured in over social media at the news, with many thanking him for his sacrifice during the pandemic.

Dr. Holohan will join an extensive list of national and international figures who have received the honour, such as Nelson Mandela, JFK, Bill Clinton and Mother Teresa.

The City Council have said the award will be given to Dr. Holohan at a future date.
