Today, 16th September, towns, villages and cities across the country will erupt with creativity as the annual cultural spectacular, Culture Night returns for another year. ?From powerful spoken word performances?to eye-catching art in motion, Culture Night promises to be an evening that is not easily forgotten no matter what cultural corner you find yourself in.
Museums, galleries, cathedrals, studios, observatories, libraries, parks, government buildings and theatres will throw open their doors for a multitude of free visits, tours, workshops, readings, performances and demonstrations for the eleventh?annual event and we have rounded up ten spots we think worthy of a visit on the night. James Joyce Museum, Dublin
Guided groups of up to 25 will be accommodated on each tour, which includes a visit to the top of the tower. James Joyce lived in the Tower in 1904 and made it the setting for the opening of ‘Ulysses’. It is now a museum devoted to his life and work.
Boomtown Rollers
Roller derby is a hard-hitting fast-paced sport which is growing rapidly in popularity. On Culture Night guests will get a chance to meet the league, put on a pair of skates and try it out.
Culture Night Tours
Get your craic on a saddle with Dublin City Bike Tours or join an artist and self-proclaimed ‘mindful vandal? Will St Leger on a tour of Dublin’s street art.? The Culture Night Tour programme has something for everyone from tours of specific areas to tours in different languages.
Freemasons Hall
Visitors will be welcomed to the meeting rooms and museum of this Victorian Hall which has been the headquarters of Irish Freemasonry since 1869. A small ensemble from the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland will perform from 6.30-8pm.
Grafton Academy of Fashion Design
Visit the renowned Dublin fashion school, steeped in the tradition of design and pattern making. To celebrate our designers of the future, fashion shows will take place at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm. Interactive exhibitions and demonstrations for all ages will be taking place all evening.
Her Story @ The Liquor Rooms & The Irish Times
Herstory invites guests to the Liquor Rooms for an enchanting evening of comedy, music, theatre and poetry; to reawaken the lost life stories of extraordinary Irish women. They were aviators, astronomers, adventurers, inventors and artists.
The Fumbally Stables
The Fumbally Stables is a sister to the Fumbally Caf?. This mid-18th century building, originally stables, is now a marriage of food, culture and education where experimentation, fermentation, workshops and musical events happen. Enjoy tours of the building and a blind food taste test with prizes.
CIT Crawford College of Art & Design, Cork
If you’ve ever wondered what art students do all day, here’s a chance to see and experience what the study of Art and Design at third level is like.? Visitors will be able to try out a selection of art and design processes; get a sense of what history and theory of art lectures are like; take a tour of the Sharman Crawford Street Building and meet current students and graduates.
The Design Tower, Dublin
The Design Tower houses a range of artisan studios; artists, jewellers, conservators and others. Meet the artists and makers at work and enjoy an interactive tour of their studio. Something of interest for the whole family.
DESIGNYARD, Dublin
DESIGNYARD is proud to exhibit Irish designer Eily O’Connell’s intriguing jewellery designs. Eily creates treasures of wearable art that have a mysterious and otherworldly presence which leaves a lasting impression.
NCAD Gallery, Dublin
The NCAD Gallery is delighted to present a two-person exhibition of works by artists Hannah Fitz and Daniel Tuomey. For this exhibition, both artists explore the confluence in their practices, working predominantly in video and sculptural mediums. Hannah Fitz works with artworks in series to create organised exercises between appearance and perception.
