The makers of Love/Hate are back with a new RTÉ crime-drama

Four years on from the finale of Love/Hate, RTÉ has confirmed a new crime-drama is in the works. The series, called Taken Down, has rolled into action this week. The cast and crew (many of whom worked on the Love/Hate set) will be filming around Dublin for the next 10 weeks.

Lynn Rafferty, who starred as Nadine in Love/Hate from 2012 until 2014, plays the part of Detective Jen Rooney. Her character is investigating the mysterious death of a Nigerian migrant, whose body was discovered near a centre for direct provision. The show will shine a light on refugees who are seeking political asylum, as well as the harsh realities of criminal landlords. Taking to Twitter this week, Rafferty said she was, “Thrilled to finally share this news. I am beyond excited to tell this story alongside such an amazing cast and crew.”

Other familiar faces include Brian Gleeson and Jimmy Smallhorne, who played Hughie ‘Cueball’ Power and Christopher ‘Git’ Loughman in Love/Hate respectively. Orla Fitzgerald (from The Wind that Shakes the Barley and Young Offenders) will also star in Taken Down, as will Enoch Frost who appeared in Skyfall.

Jane Gogan, Head of Drama at RTÉ Television said, “This new series from Spiral Pictures has the promise of something special. The story of Taken Down brings us into a world where opportunism meets the forces of Irish and globalised crime. This story is very much of the moment and I’m looking forward to introducing Taken Down to RTÉ’s audiences.”

Director David Caffrey, who is no stranger to crime-drama, returns with his dream team producers Stuart Carolan and Suzanne McAuley. They have also enlisted the expertise of best-selling author Jo Spain. Speaking to RTÉ, McAuley said, “We have set out to create a world of unique characters in a modern Ireland but in the context of the globalisation of crime. To tell this story, we have brought together a team of highly talented cast and crew from Ireland and across the globe… we are excited to see our stories come to life.”
