Strawberry Moon: The June full moon will be visible in the night sky this weekend

Though you may be more interested in blue skies and sunshine this bank holiday weekend, here’s everything you need to know about June’s ‘strawberry’ full moon.

Look, hear me out. I know we’re all currently either blinking up at the unexpected sunshine in silent disbelief, or taking refuge in the shade, gently perspiring, but the stargazers and moon watchers among us will know that the glorious weather isn’t the only thing special about the sky this long weekend.

At precisely 04:43am, in the early hours of Sunday morning, the ‘Strawberry’ full moon will reach official fullness, though it will appear to be full for the entirety of Saturday night. Though it won’t have the luscious red hue of a thirst-quenching ripe strawberry, it will give off a soft yellow or lightly golden cast, allowing for a brighter night sky.

According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, June’s full moon takes its name from a number of places, including Native American, Colonial American, and European sources. Historically, names for the full or new moons were used to track the seasons, and the ‘Strawberry’ title speaks to the period of ripening, given that June is a time where flowers bloom and early fruit ripens.

Unsurprisingly given this evocative symbolism, astrologers look upon this full moon as a signal of great abundance for many. This can be interpreted to mean abundant love, financial affluence, or an indication that your cup will runneth over.

During this time, we are encouraged to spend time engaging with things that make our souls feel full. Cooking, spending time with friends, family and loved ones, practising mindfulness and self care, enjoying some yoga or just moving your body, touching soil, and being at one with nature are all excellent ways to lean into this feeling of abundance.

Astrologically, the full moon occurs during Gemini season, and the moon is also associated with its ruling sign of Cancer. When these energies are combined, we’re left with a feeling of heightened curiosity, energy, and spiritual intensity. As the moon moves through its various monthly phases, we’re encouraged to tap into our own emotional fluctuations through deep introspection and self-reflection.

If you want to tap into the energy of the full moon this long weekend, Reiki Master and Spiritual Coach Christine Higgins is hosting a free Full Moon Healing Circle event on Killiney Beach on Monday 5 June at 8.30pm. Throughout the evening there will be light yoga flow, healing breathwork, Reiki healing, and Shamanic drumming meditation. Just bring along a mat, a pen and paper, swimming togs, a towel, and some extra warm clothes.
