Dublin city road overhaul
A new plan for Dublin city centre’s roads aimed at deprioritising vehicular traffic through the core and boosting public transport, cycling and walking will be tabled next week. The plan will see some of the capital’s busiest multi-lane traffic arteries redesigned. Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan told a cycling symposium on Thursday that the Dublin City Council proposals would include an overhaul of the Westland Row, Pearse Street and Tara Street area.
Safety wardens in Dublin city
Community safety wardens in Dublin city centre will not take on the duties of Gardaí, Minister for Justice Helen McEntee said, amid concern over anti-social behaviour and crime in the capital. Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast, she emphasised the wardens’ role is predominately about engagement: “The community safety wardens engage with people in the area. They engage with people who might be hanging around. They engage with business members to identify what is going on. They engage with younger people.”
Money mules
Nearly €17.5m was transferred illegally through so-called “money mule” accounts between January and June of this year, according to new figures. The flow of cash represented an increase of almost 50% on last year. A money mule is a person who receives criminal money into their bank account and them moves it on to another account.
The weather
The record for the hottest day in September could potentially be broken today as temperatures soar across the country. Ireland is currently under a yellow warning for high temperatures as Met Éireann said temperatures could exceed 27ºC in some areas. The yellow weather warning will remain in place until Saturday, 8am. Potential impacts include uncomfortable sleeping conditions, risk of water-related incidents, and heat stress.
