Hottest June on record
According to Met Éireann, this month will be the hottest June on record, surpassing the previous record that was held for 83 years. June 2023 will be more than half a degree higher than the previous record set in June 1940. Data shows that we’ve experienced our first June with an average temperature above 16C, with highest temperatures reaching 28.8C this year.
Sligo motorcycle crash
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision involving a motorcycle and a car that occurred on Thursday evening on the N16 at Glencar, County Sligo. The motorcyclist, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car did not requires hospital treatment.
Kevin Spacey trial
Prosecutors are set to open their case against Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey, who is charged with sex offences against four men. The Hollywood star has previously denied 12 charges, including sexual assault and indecent assault. On Wednesday, a jury panel of 14 was selected to hear the prosecution’s opening speech as Spacey watched on intently from the dock at Southwark Crown Court.
French riots
Following a third night of riots triggered by the deadly police shooting of a teenager during a traffic stop, 667 people were arrested and 249 police officers were injured. Forty thousand police officers were deployed across France – nearly four times the numbers mobilised on Wednesday – but there were few signs that government appeals to de-escalate the violence would quell the widespread anger.
Center Parcs
Center Parcs has said that it will not be renewing its sponsorship of the Tubridy Show on RTÉ when its current contract runs out later this year. There are also indications that the holiday destination company is considering pulling out of the current arrangement prematurely amidst the ongoing ‘secret payments’ scandal.
