14 people who were found inside trailer in Wexford ‘made 999 call to UK from inside trailer’
Justice minister Helen McEntee has said it is “fortuitous” that there were no deaths after 14 people were found in a refrigerated trailer at Rosslare Port in Co Wexford. Police are investigating after nine men, three women and two girls were discovered in the vehicle at Rosslare Europort at around 3am on Monday. It’s understood that the UK authorities were alerted after a 999 call was made from inside the trailer, which was subsequently passed on to Irish authorities. A local councillor in Rosslare said the people inside the trailer were 28 hours into their journey when they were rescued, and that they were struggling to breathe, and may even have attempted to make a hole in the trailer at the time the emergency call was placed from within. They were assessed by medical personnel at the scene and are understood to be in good health. Gardaí said that investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Hottest year in Ireland and rest of world could be surpassed again as El Nino peaks
Last year broke the record for the hottest year on record by a huge margin, providing “dramatic testimony” of how much warmer and more dangerous today’s climate is from the cooler one in which human civilisation developed, according to leading climate scientists. Last year shattered the previous global temperature record by almost two-tenths of a degree – the largest jump ever observed. The planet was 1.48 degrees hotter in 2023 compared with the period before mass burning of fossil fuels and other polluting activities ignited the climate crisis, Copernicus Climate Change Service (CCCS) said on Tuesday.

Ministers prioritised driving in England partly due to conspiracy theories
Ministers decided to prioritise driving over active travel because of worries among ministers about “15-minute cities”, documents seen by the Guardian show. They indicate that a significant shift in transport policy was guided at least in part by conspiracy theories. Ministers began considering curbs on cycling and walking schemes in March this year, one document said, “in response to concerns about 15-minute cities”, an urban planning concept that Rishi Sunak’s government has repeatedly mischaracterised.
