Woman charged with murder of her son Matthew Healy (6) in Co Waterford
A woman has been charged with the murder of her six-year-old son in Co Waterford. Ruth Purcell Healy, of Bishopsfield, Williamstown, Waterford, appeared before a special sitting of Waterford District Court on Tuesday evening, February 13th, in connection with the death of six-year-old Matthew Healy. Det Sgt David Shore told the court that earlier on Tuesday evening, at 6.05pm, he arrested Ms Purcell Healy in relation to the death of her son. She was subsequently charged with murder, at 6.35pm, and invited to make a reply to the charge, to which she replied “no, thank you”.

Gaza truce talks end inconclusively as Rafah braces for Israeli assault
Talks involving the US, Egypt, Israel and Qatar on a Gaza truce ended without a breakthrough on Tuesday as calls grew for Israel to hold back on a planned assault on the southern end of the enclave, crammed with over a million displaced people. The city of Rafah, whose pre-war population was about 300,000, teems with homeless people living in tent camps and makeshift shelters who fled there from Israeli bombardments in areas of Gaza farther north during more than four months of war. Israel says it wants to flush out Hamas militants from hideouts in Rafah and free Israeli hostages being held there.

Over €7 million stolen from romance fraud victims in past five years in Ireland
Over €7 million has been stolen from victims of romance fraud in the past five years in Ireland, according to gardaí. This Valentine’s Day, An Garda Síochána has issued an appeal to the public to be aware of romance scams and criminals who are taking advantage of an increase in the popularity of dating apps. Gardaí said of the 245 victims that have come forward to them since 2020, the majority were female and their average financial loss was €28,500. The highest reported loss by a female in Ireland was over €450,000 stolen in 18 transactions, while one male victim had more than €380,000 taken, according to gardaí.

The RTÉ Board should have asked more questions about Toy Show The Musical, current board chairperson Siún Ní Raghallaigh will tell the Oireachtas Committee on Media. Representatives of RTÉ, including Ms Ní Raghallaigh and Director General Kevin Bakhurst, are due to appear before the Oireachtas Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media at 1.30pm to answer questions about the transparency of expenditure, governance, and future funding of the organisation.

Alejandro Mayorkas: House votes to impeach homeland security secretary
The House of Representatives has narrowly voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, making him the first cabinet member to face impeachment in nearly 150 years. Many Republicans blame Mr Mayorkas for an unprecedented influx of migrants at the US-Mexico border. The Republican-led chamber voted 214 to 213 for the measure, after the first attempt failed last week. The issue now heads to the Democratic-led Senate, where it is likely to fail.

Late this afternoon or early evening however, more general rain will begin to move up from the Southwest. Mild and humid with highs of 11 to 14 degrees in just a light southerly breeze. Wet for a time this evening and early tonight with widespread outbreaks of rain and drizzle. While the rain and drizzle will tend to ease off, it will remain damp and locally wet especially further east. Hill, mist and coastal fog will persist too. Mild and calm overnight with lows of 8 to 11 degrees.
