Clones crash
Funeral services are to be held for two teenage best friends who were killed after the car they were travelling in crashed while on the way to a Debs ball in Co Monaghan. A funeral service will be held for Dlava Mohamed, 16, takes place at the Clonskeagh Mosque and Culture Centre at 1.30pm. A funeral mass for Kiea Mc Cann, 17, will be held at the Sacred Heart Chapel in Clones. The principal of the two teenagers’ secondary school said the two girls had been “best friends” since Dlava’s family arrived in Clones as part of a resettlement programme for Syrians.
Trump
Donald Trump is expected to appear in court to answer charges of conspiring to overturn the 2020 election, a case that will loom over the 2024 White House race for which he remains the presumptive Republican nominee. The 77-year-old is expected to enter a plea of not guilty at a hearing set to begin at 9pm Irish time before Judge Moxila Upadhyaya.
Axa to buy Laya Healthcare
Axa Insurance has announced it has acquired Ireland’s second-largest health insurer, Laya Healthcare — which has 690,000 members — for €650 million. Licence fees
RTÉ is under pressure to restore public confidence following a €2.7m drop-off in licence fee sales last month. Members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) have called on the national broadcaster to publish all reports relating to the Ryan Tubridy payments scandal and immediately set up a register of interests to ensure full transparency. It comes as figures provided by the Department of Media show that 17,297 fewer TV licences were bought last month, which equates to a €2.7m loss in revenue.
Boil water notice
A boil water notice is currently in place for roughly 100,000 homes and businesses across seven different local authorities over a dispute between water workers and local authorities.
Counties Waterford, Tipperary and Cork are affected by the notices as 17 water treatment plants are being picketed by workers. The strike action will run until Friday night at affected plants.
