American Horror Story actress Emma Roberts was recently announced as the first celebrity ambassador for American Eagle’s Aerie – a brand who for the past two years?have vowed to keep all their models and ad campaigns Photoshop-free. The company’s refusal to use airbrushed models in their campaigns is undoubtedly a positive move and having a public figure like Roberts front their new fall campaign should reinforce how forward-thinking?this is for the industry.
Roberts will be starring in the next installment of Aerie’s proudly Photoshop-free #AerieREAL campaign, set to debut this fall, and she told Refinery29 about her decision to collaborate with the brand. “I’ve been a fan of American Eagle and Aerie, and when they approached me I thought it was so cool, because no one else is doing this. I remember and seeing the last [Aerie Real] ads and thinking that unlike other ads that make me feel like I need to work out more, or I need to buy this for my face – those made me feel good, not like I had to hide behind anything,? she said.
?I want to promote the idea that it’s okay to look like yourself – you don’t have to Photoshop your Instagrams!?
Roberts also said that she felt completely comfortable knowing that none of the pictures would be airbrushed. ?I’ve actually never felt more confident and comfortable on a set and I saw the photos and was like this is great – this is just me, in clothes I feel good in, being who I am.”
She added that she felt it was important that young girls in particular see images of real, natural beauty. ?It’s important for me to be a part of this, because I see how hard it is for girls my sister’s age (she’s 14) with social media, and feeling like they need to look a certain way. I want to promote the idea that it’s okay to look like yourself – you don’t have to Photoshop your Instagrams!”
The campaign means a lot to Roberts, who said that it’s important that girls feel good about themselves as they are, and realise that the ?normal? girls depicted in ads and movies aren’t real. “I hope girls feel good knowing that when you see these supposedly ‘perfect’ people in movies or in ads, that’s not real. The way actors and celebrities are presented can be so unrealistic, and I wanted to put myself out there in a different way,? Roberts said.
We think she sounds like an ideal choice for what sounds like such a positive campaign. Here’s hoping other fashion houses follow suit. The official pictures haven’t been released yet, but some behind-the-scenes snaps were shared on social media this weekend.
