Five shirts that will look and feel fabulously cool in the hot weather

I’m one of those awful people who begins to complain about the good weather when temperatures rise to anything over 20 degrees (sorry sun lovers…). I become easily irritated and agitated in the heat, so my summer wardrobe is all about fluid, breathable pieces. Loose-fitting shirts, in particular, have become my go-to as they offer whatever ventilation is available in this muggy weather (luckily I work in Dun Laoghaire where there’s always a sea breeze to cool down my flame-red face). Here are five great shirts for women who feel the heat like me.

There’s something nicely maritime about this tunic-style shirt. I’d wear it unbuttoned at the neck for a more relaxed, and cooler, look (literally and figuratively).

Contrasting striped tunic, €19.99 (was €39.95) at Zara

This Etro blouse is so fresh and lightweight, it’s perfect for balmy summer days. I love the print and the front pleats, both of which give it a very distinctive feel.

Cos is a great label for finding fluid pieces that look contemporary and cool. I like the contrast this shirt offers between the boyish collar and the flourish of the asymmetric hem. This a really simple piece that offers a hint of drama too.

A pretty print, exposed shoulders and a silk fabric make this Topshop Boutique piece a great choice at this time of year. It will feel as lovely to wear as it looks on. Just don’t forget to suncream your shoulders.

Cold-shoulder top, Boutique, €103 at Topshop

This is a beautiful piece from Massimo Dutti. It’s elegant and feminine without being in any way girlish or fussy. It looks like the kind of piece that will keep you beautifully cool in the hot weather.
