How To Get A Hairstyle With A Difference

At a time when we are all clambering for something fresh and innovative, creativity cannot be undervalued.?We caught up with the IMAGE Business of Beauty 2017 nominees for Most Creative Talent in Hair to get their thoughts on trends, products and their own personal approach to hair. If you are seeking a stylist who will create and master something truly individual, then look no further.

What does creativity mean to you?

Creativity?is everything. It’s allowing me to set my mind free and do what I want, without even realising.

Marta Plechowska, Sean Taaffe

Creativity in the world of hairdressing means being able to express who I am as a hairstylist through my work, being creative in my hairdressing allows me to think outside the box, experiment with different styles and colours and create signature looks for my clients. It is the fun artistic side of hairdressing and nothing is more rewarding than transforming a client’s look and making her look and feel amazing.

Dawn O’Sullivan, Headmasters

Are there any celebrities or people of note who you admire for their hair bravery?

Jessie J, who had amazing long hair, shaved it for charity, which has to be admired.

Deirdre McDermott, Raymond Skelton

Kylie Jenner is one I’ve been keeping an eye on for drastic hair changes, whether it’s real or faux she isn’t afraid to completely transform her look on a weekly basis. Showing different sides of her personality through her styles.

Dawn O’Sullivan, Headmasters

Do you prefer experimenting with colour or shape?

Both colour and shape go hand-in-hand, as one is a reflection of the other. It’s about the overall vision, so could never choose, I’m in love with both.

In your opinion, are there any rules when it comes to hair?

There are no rules in hair and age is only a number. Look at the person as an individual and do what suits them.

Deirdre McDermott, Raymond Skelton

Rules are definitely made to be broken – it’s how we evolve. But, there are certain things we must watch out for, like face shapes and skin tone. Not everything works for everyone.

Jacqui Fay, Kazumi

Do you have any hair heroes??

Oh yes, probably too many, but particularly an amazing gentleman from Belgium, Ludovic Beckers. His creations are inspiring. He’s the Vidal of our generation; from design, colour and finish, he’s incredible.

Jacqui Fay, Kazumi

Two of my biggest hair heros are Vidal Sassoon, I could watch videos of him cutting hair all day, the way his hands move around the head creating shapes and styles, he was a hair genius, I also love Anthony Moscolo, i love hove creative his work is, he definitely breaks the rules and creates unique looks. I love working with Tigi, they are so creative and bold in their work. You can tell a Tigi style from just looking at a picture. So unique!

Dawn O’Sullivan, Headmasters

Have you ever experimented wildly on your own hair, now or in the past?

Right now my?hair?is pretty natural, but last year it was really wild. I have gone through green, blue, pink and many more?hair?colours. Short?hair?and?hair?tattoos are no strangers to me – I like to experiment a lot. I have best job in the world for that.

Marta Plechowska, Sean Taaffe

I’ve spent 20+ years experimenting on my own hair and sometimes the results are not so pretty, but thats the point. I think to find what works and what doesn’t, I’ve pushed my hair to limits that I would never do to anyone else’s ?hair. It was all in the name of experimentation. I’m in the middle of one at moment so we’ll see where that takes us?

If you could create a look for anyone in the world, who would it be?

The middle aged lady I saw last week, with?hair’down to her waist and no colour. I’d love to transform her?hair – I would get great satisfaction out of it.

Marta Plechowska, Sean Taaffe

If I had a chance I would love to do Eva Longoria’s hair. I’ve been asked to recreate her up styles so many times.

Deirdre McDermott, Raymond Skelton

And finally, what are your ‘hero’ products? What could you not live without?

My hero products are TIGI Masterpiece Hairspray, Oh Bee Hive Dry Shampoo and Head Rush Shine Spray.

Deirdre McDermott, Raymond Skelton

There are a few products I can’t live without, depending on the look I’m trying to achieve, I love TIGI Catwalk Texturising Salt Spray, because it can be used to create many different looks when used on wet or dry hair. And, for finishing, I love to use TIGI Bed Head Headrush or Joyride Texturising Powder. I’m addicted to TIGI products, used on their own or mixed together you can achieve almost any look.

Dawn O’Sullivan, Headmasters

Current favourite Joico Hair Shake and Schwarzkopf Silhouette Super Hold Hairspray. I love, love, love that you can just go mad with these two.

Marta Plechowska, Sean Taaffe

I’ve so many? Redken One United is incredible and works on almost all hair types. Also, Redken Triple Take Hairspray, Shu Uemura Essence Absolue, Phytology Phytoolume Actif Volumising Spray. They would be the usual suspects in my bag.

Jacqui Fay, Kazumi
