Barn jackets are the classic coat style you’ll wear all autumn long

Barn jackets are the classic coat style you’ll wear all autumn long

A modern spin on the classic wax jacket we’ve come to associate with this time of year, barn jackets are fashion’s latest autumnal obsession.

This season’s it coat, the humble barn jacket has taken over as autumn/winter’s most coveted item… but, what exactly is it? Not far off a wax jacket—made fashionable by the likes of Barbour and Alexa Chung—barn jackets are a type of casual outerwear, quite utilitarian in style. Originally designed for farmers and outdoor workers, they’re made from durable materials (like canvas, waxed cotton or twill) and are known for their boxy silhouettes, large pockets and contrasting corduroy (or sometimes leather) collars.

Practical while still being fashionable, they’re distinctly unfussy and their versatility means they’ll pair well with everything from slip skirts to your favourite denim. So, if you’re in the market for a new coat to see you through the coming months, shop our edit of barn jackets below.
