Everything we know about ‘And Just Like That’ season 2

Producers have just confirmed that Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte will return for a second season of ‘And Just Like That’.

*This article contains spoilers.*

The highly anticipated HBO reboot of Sex and the City had its worldwide premiere last December. Introducing a whole new generation of fans to Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, the series saw the trio reprise their roles as New York City’s finest fashionistas. But 10 episodes quickly came to a close, with no mention of a season two… until now, that is.

Last night revealing that the much-talked-about series will return for a second run, executive producer Michael Patrick King confirmed the news, commenting, “I am delighted and excited to tell more stories about these vibrant, bold characters – played by these powerful, amazing actors. The fact is, we’re all thrilled. And Just like That… our sex life is back.”

Head of original content at HBO Max, Sarah Aubrey, echoed much the same sentiments, adding that the network was thrilled to see “the cultural conversation generated by these characters and their stories”. “We are proud of the work Michael Patrick King and our wonderful writers, producers, cast and crew have done to bring these stories to the screen,” she noted, “We can’t wait for fans to see what’s in store for season 2!”

While the reboot was not without its criticisms (or controversies!), the ratings speak for themselves and the renewal comes after a highly successful first season which cemented AJLT as the streaming service’s strongest debut to date – performing better than any other premiere for an HBO Max Original series.

Here’s what we know about season two so far.

Cast

Aside from the core three (a.k.a. SJP, Nixon and Davis), very little has been confirmed by way of cast members. Season one of the reboot welcomed several new faces to the SATC world including the likes of Sara Ramírez (Che Diaz), Sarita Choudhury (Seema Patel) and Nicole Ari Parker (Lisa Todd Wexley) amongst others… all of whom proved to be quite popular with fans and all of whom we can only assume will return for season two.

Chris Noth is unlikely to appear in new episodes given the sexual assault allegations against him. Mr Big was killed off very early on in the reboot, with subsequent episodes focusing on Carrie’s journey through grief. According to reports, Noth was originally supposed to reappear again towards the end of the series, however, producers made the decision to edit those scenes out of the reboot in light of the accusations.

As for Kim Cattrall? There’s still somewhat of a question mark over her name considering how the season one finale ended which set season one up nicely for a second and even hinted at the possibility of a reunion between Carrie and Samantha. That said, the complexities and messiness of adult relationships are not as easy to tie up in real life as they are on-screen. Cattrall has already made it clear that she’s uninterested in returning and recently, SJP, voiced her thoughts on the matter too, admitting that she’s not sure she would be comfortable with her former co-star making a comeback after all. “I don’t think I would [be ok with Cattrall returning], because I think there’s just too much public history of feelings on her part that she’s shared. I haven’t participated in or read articles, although people are inclined to let me know.”

Showrunner Michael Patrick King was quite clear on his viewpoint too, admitting that though he adores Samantha, he has “no realistic expectation of Kim Cattrall ever appearing again”. In fact, they didn’t even ask Cattrall to come back for season one. Why? “Because she’s said what she had said.”

Plotline

Season one was all about Carrie navigating widowhood in the wake of Big’s death. Moving house, finishing her book and even going on a date (at her editor’s advice), the season ended with Carrie kissing her podcast producer, Franklyn (Ivan Hernandez)… so perhaps romance is on the cards for season two?

We’re also still waiting on an Aidan Shaw return… John Corbett led us all to believe that he’d feature in the first season, but HBO never officially confirmed his statement and that was supposedly “never in the works” according to AJLT writer Julie Rottenberg. Never say never though as Parker told Andy Cohen “all of it’s possible” when pushed on whether he’ll be in future episodes.

It will also be interesting to see how the Samantha plotline plays out now that a supposed reunion has happened. Sarita Choudhury previously told Elle that she’d love to see her character meet up with Cattrall should she ever return – and that’s definitely a pairing we’d be interested in too.

“I think it would be so much fun to watch. And I think they would eye each other quite a bit. They do obviously have things in common and I think what would be so fun is – you know when two animals meet and they check each other out? It’s kind of that. And it could end up being very comedic or quite tender, in a weird way. And also I think, for the most part, I’ve had most of my scenes with Carrie and I don’t know why, but I’m so protective of her. And so if I did meet Samantha, it would probably be in a moment of hanging out with Carrie. I can imagine that.”

Season one saw Charlotte grapple with new family changes and her relationship with her daughters. There’s still plenty of scope for more there too with Vanity Fair quoting Davis as saying, “The Rose [who now goes by Rock] journey is going to be a long one. It’s probably not something that’s going to have a distinct end within [season one], at least. Hopefully, we’ll get to come back and you’ll see what ends up happening with Rose.”

Elsewhere, Miranda ended the season finale by telling her Columbia University professor, Dr Nya Wallace, that she had declined an internship with the Human Rights Watch in order to be with Che while they film their pilot in Los Angeles.

Release date

While there is no official release date for season two of And Just Like That, fans can probably expect it to return sometime in 2023 at the earliest. SJP is currently starring with her real-life husband, Matthew Broderick in Plaza Suite on Broadway, so will be otherwise engaged until mid-June, but filming for AJLT could presumably start this summer once that show is finished. We’ll be sure to update you as we hear more.
