Who wouldn’t want to cuddle up by the fire in one of these log cabins during these dark and cold winter months? Which describes a lot of months in Ireland.

As we get into the cold and dark winter nights, the idea of cuddling up around a warm stove or open fire because ever more appetising. And let’s be real – this doesn’t just happen in wintertime.

While we might have grand visions of doors flung open to the garden and night after night of alfresco dining, our reality is that the fire is roaring all the way through the year. So why not invest in the perfect winter home.

Log cabins tick all of our winter home boxes and while there are very few available in Ireland, we’ve found three in varying states of repair that won’t break the bank.

12 Cornadarragh, Belturbet, Cavan
€170,000

This Scandinavian-style cabin consists of three spacious bedrooms and three bathrooms. Spread across two floors and coming to sizeable 120 square metres, it’s in perfect condition and ready to move into.

The house also comes with some beautiful views overlooking Lough Erne from the wraparound verandah and the large open-plan living/kitchen/diner. Who wouldn’t want a weekend or two spent here?

Curraghmore Point, Coolbawn, Tipperary
€85,000

Another one with a lake view, this time in Tipperary, this cedar wood cabin is being sold by auction. Located on the shores of Lough Derg, it has direct access to the lake. The cabin has been lived in recently so is not damp but looks like it could use a little TLC.

Three bedrooms, two bathrooms and an open plan living area with solid-fuel stove have plenty of charm but really it’s the full timber slatting that sets this place apart.

Coolmountain, Dunmanway, West Cork
€69,000

A second property in Coolmoutain to come up in the last few months, this timber house is located alongside a handful of other homes, although it is completely private.

Featuring two bedrooms, a bathroom and an open-plan living space, there’s also another timber building located on the .6 acre property. It boasts plenty of light and views over the mountains, a lovely little escape.
