Combat darker evenings with these 14 portable lamps to brighten up any corner of your home

The simplest way to add a soft glow exactly where you need it, whether that’s on your dining table, a corner of your living room, or on a shelf as you wind down for bed.

The start of September means the beginning of darker evenings, and it focuses the need for getting the lighting in your home right.

The general consensus amongst interior designers is that one bright source of light hanging from your ceiling is rarely the best option, and most instead favour lighting layered at different levels and angles to create a softer, more even effect throughout your room.

Lamps are an important aspect of this, but it can be hard to have enough to illuminate every spot just as you would like, not to mention the problem of having correctly placed plug sockets in a room.

That’s why portable lamps are a great solution. These battery-powered or rechargeable designs can not only be placed anywhere without having to hunt for an extension lead, they can also be moved from room to room as you need.

Perhaps you place one at the centre of your dinner table to create a warm glow, and then bring it into the living room with you afterwards to brighten up a dark corner or a bookshelf. Or bring it up to your bedroom as you wind down for the evening.

Here are 14 designs we have on our wishlist.
