The best dressed at the Golden Globes 2019

The best dressed at the Golden Globes 2019

Last night’s Golden Globes kicked off a shiny start to 2019, and I had my eyes peeled for Hollywood’s best dressed starlets – down to the very last diamond. Whereas in 2018, the red carpet style was highly political with attendees wearing black in honour of the #TimesUp movement, this year the mood was more anything goes.

Statement chokers were a bold but sophisticated way celebrities added personality to their looks, while fantasy-inspired princess gowns and tailored silhouettes kept the red carpet fresh and appealing. Below, I’ve put the best dressed under the IMAGE microscope. Expect a jaw-dropping look from Lady Gaga, plenty of multi-coloured sequins, chiffon ruffles, and embroidered (drool-worthy) menswear, thanks to Billy Porter.

Here are our favourite looks from the 2019 Golden Globe Awards red carpet.

I felt I didn’t need to see anyone else after Lady Gaga effectively stole the show in a blue billowing sleeve Valentino haute couture gown. The artist was also dripping in Tiffany diamonds, and had her hair dyed light blue to match. Gaga paid homage to Judy Garland, the original star of A Star Is Born. Beautiful, thoughtful, on-theme and on-brand for Gaga. I just loved it.

Irish Hollywood queen Saoirse Ronan was the epitome of modern red carpet glamour last night. The plunging silver Gucci dress, paired with pear-shaped emerald earrings from the Haute Joaillerie Collection, was both sexy and sophisticated. Simply stunning.

I always think black pants are a brave choice for the red carpet, but Julia Roberts pulls it off in Stella McCartney – I’ve always been a lover of a menswear-twist. She wore a custom one-shoulder dress with flowing pleated skirt and black tapered trousers. Julia’s tight, lightly-curled, hair swept effortlessly to one side gives this whole look a girlish vibe. In other notes, does this woman age, ever? She looked incredible.

I wasn’t surprised how much I drooled over Regina King’s look – I’m a serious lover of sequins. The actress who won the Golden Globe award for best actress in a supporting role in If Beale Street Could Talk frosted us in rosé sequins on the carpet. She accessorised her dazzling custom Alberta Ferretti limited-edition dress with silver earrings and her shoulder-length hair in simple waves. Gorgeous!

I had to do a double-take to breathe in the frothy lusciousness of Kiki Layne’s ashy pink custom Dior ballet dress. The red carpet breakout star coiled her hair into a neat and elegant dancer’s bun, perfectly complementing the pink tulle wrapped bodice and full-skirt. So soft and elegant.

Another showstopper from Valentino. Gemma Chan looked Hollywood-ready in a fresh and contemporary-cut Maison Valentino Couture gown. The back of the dress was cut low and tied with a large feminine bow at the neck, while a train flowed effortlessly behind her. She tied her hair in a low, messy bun and allowed her naturally flawless skin to shine by opting for a fresh-faced look. The red lip adds a bold punctuation and a strong fashion edge.

Emily Blunt looked absolutely stunning, head-to-toe, wearing an exquisite sleeveless lace dress by Alexander McQueen. The actress graced the red carpet with stunning diamond earrings and a subtle grey eye shadow to complete the icy metallic look. Beautiful.

White for the red carpet is a brave choice as it can so easily look bridal, but Dakota Fanning nailed this. I was surprised by how much I liked this look. Something so simple and plain would usually bore me, but Dakota in this bespoke Armani Privé, paired beautifully with her milky skin tone, looked like the most perfect ice queen.

Only someone as pretty as Emmy Rossum could pull off this sugar-plum princess gown as elegantly as she did on last night’s red carpet. It’s everything I would want to wear if I was a either a Hollywood star or a Disney princess. Where’s my tiara?

Billy Porter made last night’s Golden Globes his runway. Fashion for him means nothing is off-limits and he is rewriting the definition of classic menswear. Floral embroidery, sequinned embellishments, red velvet shoes (with a heel), and a pink satin cape? It’s so extra I couldn’t love it, or him, more.
