In the mood for eggs benedict this bank holiday? We have found the best places to get it.
This writer has never really been a ‘foodie’ per say but eggs benedict is my weakness.
Should I think about a time before discovering eggs benedict, I think of Julia Roberts almost gleefully telling Richard Gere in Runaway Bride how she “hates all the other kinds of eggs” admitting she’d been foolish to miss out on its gloriousness for pretty much her entire adult life (same Julia, same).
Weekends are made for brunch indulgence, so if you’re planning yours, we’ve rounded up a list of a handful of the Dublin spots we’re cracked about (sorry) when it comes to egg benedict:
Situated on Aungier Street, Whitefriar Grill’s menu has a range of eggy-dishes on offer, but their eggs benedict (original) and their gambas benedict with an out-of-this-world citrus hollandaise sauce are favourites. Portion-size is perfect too, leaving enough room for one of their delicious brunch cocktails or desserts for after.
Tucked away in Temple Bar, Roberta’s is still relatively new and while everything on their brunch menu is worth boasting about, their benedict royale with smoked salmon and potatoes is the star of the show. (You can also get it with ham if you’re not in the mood for fish). It was so good the last time that some of us (ahem) ordered two portions.
Located in Grand Canal Dock and often hailed as the best Eggs Benedict in Dublin, herbstreet’s variation stands out because of their paper-thin slices of ham (as opposed to thick slices) with an amazingly-cheesy muffin. Portions are also very generous so arrive hungry. They don’t take reservations as it’s first come first serve, so our advice is to go early as there’ll almost certainly be a queue to get in.
For a benedict dish all about the bacon, it’s more than worth a visit to The House in Howth for their variation. Their creamy hollandaise sauce is among the best; so good you’ll be tempted to go back for more on a weekly basis.
This one is all about the maple-glazed pork belly. Served with poached eggs, a side of potatoes and a dreamy hollandaise, it’s one of the few places you can get a benedict with pork – and worth making the trip to Percy Place in Dublin 4 for that alone.
Their signature “Green Eggs & Ham” on the brunch menu is reason alone to get out of your warm, cosy bed on a Sunday. With its divine shredded ham hock, and perfect hollandaise, there’s nothing further left to say except go try it.
Mexican style Eggs Benedict means you get your eggs with a spicy twist (and then some). Served with an english muffin, chorizo, red onion, fresh avocado, habanero hollandaise (for that extra kick), and poached eggs, you’ll return to this Ranelagh location for seconds (and thirds).
