This five bedroom house with sea views, an indoor swimming pool, sauna, gym and games room has everything you could possibly want

During lockdown, many of us have been missing things like our regular gym visits, trips to the swimming pool with the kids, or playing snooker with our friends in the pub. The lucky new owner of Somali, situated on the Carrickbrack Road in Howth, wouldn’t have to miss out on any of these activities, as it comes equipped with a swimming pool, sauna, gym and games room.

The five bedroom house was built in 1912, and was redesigned in the 1950s by renowned Irish architect Michael Scott. The house fell vacant for a number of years before again being redesigned by Crean Salley Architects in 2001. In its current configuration, the house makes the most of its elevated views, while paying homage to its original deco style.

A long driveway takes you up to this house, which sits above the surrounding landscape. A cantilevered drawing room is one of the most spectacular spaces in this home. With a split level giving extra ceiling height, large sliding glass doors look out to a terrace with views across Dublin Bay. A fireplace from the 1950s renovation remains in this room.

The open plan kitchen and living room has the unusual feature of a window that looks into the swimming pool, which would be ideal for a family with children as you could supervise them in the pool from the main living area. This space leads onto another terrace, one of several connections to the outdoors and the beautiful views.

A family library and study has floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, perfect for displaying a lifetime’s collection of favourite reads. A cinema room is located off the main hallway, as well as an additional living room. The four bedrooms in the main house all have en-suites.

At the end of the hall is the entrance to the swimming pool, home spa and gym area, providing multiple ways to relax and keep fit from the comfort of your own home. On a lower level is a games room, as well as a steam room.

There is also access to a self-contained one bedroom apartment, which also has its own entrance, and a private patio area, perfect for multi-generational living, whether it’s retired parents or young adults who want their own space.

The elevated site covers around one and a half acres, and is south-facing, so ideal for a keen gardener. The surrounding garden is mature, which creates privacy from all angles for this home. At €3.6 million, these luxurious features in such a sought-after location certainly come with a price, but that won’t stop us dreaming of summer evenings on that terrace.
