Have you watched ‘Mindhunter’ yet? Produced by Charlize Theron, the mentally exhausting, brilliant Netflix series is finally back for a second season next month. Here’s everything we know about it so far…

This week, Netflix invited members of the press to experience a first-look into the second season of the critically acclaimed show. They released a trove of images and the trailer for the new season  — but with an interactive twist. The first look was presented as an interactive experience with 200-plus images (eight of which are above) from the second season to explore before the trailer was unlocked and could be viewed. It wasn’t available to share with the general public (just yet) but it looks every bit as intriguing as season 1.

What do we know about season 2?

The preview images alone gave a deeper look into what is to come when FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) return. Ford had an emotional crisis the end of the first series but he returns to investigate a new wave of murders.

Mindhunter’s premise was based on the real-life exploits of an FBI unit who studied the damaged psyches of serial killers and the innovative FBI agents who attempt to understand and catch them.  This time, their theories have proven a success, so they attempt to take them one step further.

The Behavioural Science Unit is now established and we know Charles Manson (played by Damon Herriman, who also portrays Manson in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Son of Sam, and the BKT Strangler (Dennis Rader),  and Edmund Kemper, aka the Co-Ed Killer (played by standout Cameron Britton) will feature second time around. Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) will also return to help the duo continue their groundbreaking analysis. There’s also plenty of new cast members featured including Joe Tuttle, Albert Jones, Stacey Roca, Michael Cerveris, Lauren Glazier and Sierra McClain.

The focus will mainly be on the Atlanta child murders of 1979-1981 in Georgia, according to director David Fincher (Seven, House of Cards) who also executive produces the series.

“We could probably have done three seasons on the Atlanta child murders. It’s a huge and sweeping and tragic story.” He also said the second season would be about evolution and the FBI being “dragged, kicking and screaming, into the present,” he said during a recent podcast.

When will it air on Netflix?

The nine-episode second season will premiere on Netflix on August 16th – so get reacquainted with season 1 while you wait.
