The massively successful and contentious Netflix series Making a Murderer is coming back to our screens for a second series. And the best part? It’s coming next month.
The Emmy Award-winning original documentary series, which followed the difficult journey of American man Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey to their convictions for the murder of a woman called Teresa Halbach, explored the American legal system and the fight of the mens’ families to clear their name. The series achieved massive success, with thousands of viewers campaigning on behalf of Avery to have his conviction overturned.
Since the first series aired in 2015, it seemed that Avery’s nephew Brendan Dassey would be released, as the public argued that his confession was coerced and therefore unlawful. But even though a U.S magistrates judge ordered Dassey’s release in 2016, the decision was over-ruled by the Court of Appeals in 2017, and Dassey remains in custody.
The second series, due to launch on Netflix on October 19th with 10 new episodes, is set to follow the postconviction process, exploring the emotional toll it has taken on the families involved. The series will also introduce Avery and Dassey’s postconviction lawyers and their fight to prove their clients’ innocence.
Speaking about the new episodes, writers and directors of Making a Murderer Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos said: “building on Part 1, which documented the experience of the accused, in Part 2, we have chronicled the experience of the convicted and imprisoned, two men each serving life sentences for crimes they maintain they did not commit.We are thrilled to be able to share this new phase of the journey with viewers.”
