Three dream houses to buy in Portobello right now

Located on the Grand Canal in Dublin 8, Portobello oozes Victorian charm. Red-brick properties line leafy streets as native swans go about their day. While steeped in history, the south city suburb is a lively, cosmopolitan neighbourhood. Amazing bars, pubs and restaurants are aplenty, while independent cafes serve some of the best brunches in town.

When it comes to amenities, Portobello has everything you could ever need. Not only are there gyms, banks and shops; the beautiful Iveagh Gardens are just a 12-minute walk away. The nearest hospitals are St James’ and St Vincent’s, both of which can be reached in 15 minutes by car. The area is served by Kevin St District Garda Station and Rathmines Garda Station.

Portobello is so close to the city centre that calling it a suburb seems a stretch. Everything in Dublin City is within walking distance; say farewell to traffic jams. Of course, public transport is available when needed. The area is served by Dublin Bus routes 9, 16, 68 and 122. If this sounds like your ideal neighbourhood, have a look at these beautiful homes available to buy right now.

37 Synge Street, €1,500,000

Dating back to 1864, this house at 37 Synge Street boasts a mix of Georgian and Victorian style architecture. It’s packed with character; retaining its original fireplaces and ornate plasterwork. The four-bed home has been restored to an excellent condition by its current owner and has been elegantly redecorated throughout. A south-facing garden is located to the rear of the property, including mature trees and shrubbery. Estate agent DNG says off-street parking is available to the back of the house, while on-street parking is available on Synge Street.

15 Bloomfield Park, €495,000

Though deceptively small-looking from the front, this end-of-terrace cottage at 15 Bloomfield Park is bright and spacious inside. Estate agent Sherry Fitzgerald says it’s been cleverly extended and remodelled throughout, following design instruction by architect Morgan Flynn. Floor-to-ceiling windows illuminate the ground floor, while the kitchen opens out onto a private, south-facing garden. With two double bedrooms (one of which opens onto a sunny roof terrace) and plenty of storage, this house would make a lovely home for a couple or young family.

78 Heytesbury Street, €875,000

This recently refurbished period home is spread over three levels and is in turn-key condition. With four bedrooms and three bathrooms, 78 Heytesbury Street is ideal for family living. The living room features an ornate marble fireplace and the kitchen is fitted with stainless steel appliances. Low-maintenance gardens are located to the front and back of the house, and there’s potential to extend the property subject to planning permission. Estate agent O’Connor Shannon says the large Victorian windows offer ample city views, while off-street parking is available to the rear.
