It was the favourite to sweep the boards at last night’s Golden Globes, and La La Land did just that, taking home a record seven gongs including??Best Motion Picture? for a Musical or Comedy and wins for its stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling for Best Actor and Best Actress respectively. That was where the predictability ended, as quite a few shock wins saw the expected takers leave empty handed.?There was an early upset when Aaron Taylor-Johnson took home the award for the Best Supporting Actor – the strong favourite to win was ?Mahershala Ali, who was expected to win for his turn in Barry Jenkins? Moonlight?as he’s won every other major award so far this season for his performance. To some surprise, Natalie Portman didn’t walk away with Best Actress for her praised performance in Jackie, this honour going to Isabelle Huppert instead for her performance in Paul Verhoeven’s controversial Elle (the film also won?also won the Globe for Best Foreign Language film).
It was also a big night for British talent, with TV series The Night Manager snapping up three – Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman and Hugh Laurie all won on the night for their performances – while?Claire Foy?was awarded for Best Actress in a TV series, for her performance in The Crown. ?And it was an evening of firsts; actress?Tracee Ellis Ross became the first black woman to win the award for lead TV comedic actress at the Golden Globes since 1983 and her stirring speech went down a treat. “This is for all of the women of colour whose stories, ideas, thoughts are not always considered worthy or important but I see you and we see you.? Casey Affleck (despite the negativity surrounding him) and Viola Davis were other notable winners and finally,?Moonlight surprised all with its win for Best Motion Picture Drama having been snubbed in all other nominated categories.
