Paris boasts some of the most picturesque cafes in the world, and rightly so. In a place where the buildings and parks are as beautiful as the people, it seems only right that the cafes should match up accordingly.

Cafe culture is huge in Paris, as is the culture of taking time to relax and enjoy the moment. Whether that includes a morning croissant and coffee on the terrace, or an evening carafe of Merlot at the bar, patrons are encouraged to take their time and to enjoy their surroundings while they do. Between the colourful facades and quirky interiors, the temptation to spend hours in these establishments is strong, and the temptation to Instagram it, stronger still.

1 Au Vieux Paris d’Arcole

This is a personal favourite. On a quiet street away from the hustle and bustle of nearby Notre Dame crowds, Au Vuex Paris d’Arcole can be found, looking like something out of a children’s storybook, complete with an adornment of wisteria and purple terrace chairs which complement the pastel shop front perfectly.

2 La Maison Rose

With a name that means The Pink House, this is one cafe that doesn’t leave much to the imagination when you realise that yes, it is simply a gorgeous dusty pink former-house in the Parisien highlands of Montmartre. Unfortunately, it has become a bit of a tourist trap of late, with tourist trap prices to match. Nonetheless, it’s worth stopping by just to get a snap outside.

3 Merci Used Book Café

Located just a short walk from the very trendy Parisien area of “le Marais”, this cafe/ used book store is a must-visit for anyone who values books, boiled eggs and freshly brewed coffee as much as they do gentle lighting and cozy, peaceful surroundings.

4 Shakespeare and Company Café

Come for the cute factor, and stay for the coffee and people-watching; all of which are high quality. The Shakespeare and Company bookstore has been delighting book-lovers since 1919, and only in 2015 did it introduce the addition of a cafe right next door, much to the public’s delight. Here you’ll also get a delicious selection of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free food and drinks.

5 Le Consulat

Pop over to Le Consultat after your visit to Sacre Coeur and you’ll quickly realise why this is one of the most photographed cafes in Paris, what with its very Parisien shop front, well-positioned terrace and classic interiors. Knowing that Picasso, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec and Monet used to all frequent here just makes a visit here all the more enjoyable.
