The Cannes Film Festival has officially kicked off, and it’s one of the chicest events on the calendar. The annual event is one of the most prestigious festivals in the world, and the celebrity turnout and red carpet glamour are just as important as the films on show, as these vintage images will attest. From Brigitte Bardot to Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor; scroll below for the fashion and faces that gave Cannes its kudos.
1. Brigitte Bardot
Brigitte Bardot is the quintessential Cannes girl, and the star most often associated with the festival’s iconic history. She was just 19 when she was photographed running barefoot on the beach in 1953.
2. Elizabeth Taylor
Elizabeth Taylor is pictured here with her then-husband, producer Mike Todd at the Cannes Film Festival in 1958. She remains the epitome of Hollywood glamour.
3. Alfred Hitchcock And Tippi Hedren
Alfred Hitchcock and actress Tippi Hedren are pictured here in 1963 after the premiere of his latest thriller The Birds?in Cannes, which she played the lead. It remains her most iconic role. Trivia: For those that don’t know, acting spans three generations in Hedren’s family; she is the mother of actress Melanie Griffith and grandmother of starlet Dakota Johnson.
4. Grace Kelly
Grace Kelly, then officially known as Princess Grace of Monaco, sits with the Mayor of Cannes during a luncheon at the Hotel Martinez, during the Cannes Film Festival, May 1955. Love that chic?ruffled bow on Kelly.
5. Jack Nicholson And Anjelica Huston
Jack Nicholson stands with Anjelica Huston at the Cannes Film Festival May, 1974 in Cannes, France. Nicholson won the festival’s Best Actor award for his performance as a military policeman in the film The Last Detail.?These two took up many column inches in those days.
6. Catherine Deneuve And David Bailey
French actress, the fabulous Catherine Deneuve, is pictured here with her husband, English photographer and legendary star snapper, David Bailey at the Festival of Cinema in Cannes in 1966.
7. Cary Grant And Kim Novak
Cary Grant (swoon!) and Kim Novak, pictured here in 1959 having a very Hitchcock moment: Novak had starred in the iconic Vertigo the year before, whilst Cary Grant has just wrapped on North By Northwest. Possibly the most stylish Cannes pairing of the time.
8. Jane Birkin And Serge Gainsbourg
French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg with English actress Jane Birkin on the beach at Cannes, 19th May 1969. A couple that was WAY too cool for school.
9. Vanessa Redgrave
Actress Vanessa Redgrave sits on the beach wearing an (amazing) chevron patterned dress, as she promoted her film Blow Up?at the Cannes Film Festival, May 10th 1967.
10. Diana Dors
Diana Dors, the starlet, with the Cadillac in which she arrived at the Cannes Film Festival.
11. Johnny Depp And Kate Moss
The then ‘it’ couple of the late nineties attended the festival in 1998.

13. Princess Diana?
Diana, Princess Of Wales was the toast of Cannes when she attended with her then-husband, Prince Charles, in 1987. This pale blue chiffon gown with matching scarf, by Catherine Walker, would go down in history as one of her most famous fashion moments.
Madonna wearing Jean-Paul Gaultier at Cannes, promoting a screening of?In Bed With Madonna in 1991. Make of it what you will.
15. Mia Farrow
The actress epitomises all that is good about swinging sixties fashion in this snap. Here she is pictured at the film festival at the premiere of Rosemary’s Baby with director Roman Polanski and this then-wife, the late Sharon Tate in 1968.
