10 Must-Have Jackets To Buy For The Tricky Transitional Weather

It’s September?and time for that always pesky season I like to call “What the actual hell is going on with the weather?”

As I rush around in September never, ever quite managing to get the outfit right for the day ahead, I have often found myself wondering if anybody genuinely has ever died from sweating? The key to cracking transitional style is light layers. You want a jacket to throw over the shoulders as the evenings get cooler but not quite a full-on winter coat. We’ve scoured the high street to find the best outerwear for the tricky season.

A kimono style jacket perfectly straddles the coat cardigan divide and has a kind of inherent louche coolness that works with nearly any silhouette.

Kimono,?19.95 at Zara

The oversized cardigan is a bit of staple for the pre-autumn period. We love the styling of this black Zara number, proving that a cardi isn’t simply the preserve of grannies and indie guys.

Oversized cardigan, €19.95 at Zara

This cape meets cardigan idea is another great option for these muggy days.

Contrast trim slouchy cardigan, €35.95 at Mango

A denim jacket is a classic must-have for any wardrobe but we like this chic twist on this style staple.

Corduroy jacket, €59.95 at Mango

Bomber jackets have been having a sustained moment for the last year or so and we love this floral, chinoiserie-influenced one from H&M.

A blazer-come-kimono is a great way to work the kimono trend while still having an element of tailoring for a smart look that’s not too formal.

We’ve seen the definition of capes shift somewhat over the last few years and this cropped sleeve number is eminently wearable.

Khaki cape, €40 at River Island

Every wardrobe needs a trench, for all those moments (of which I have several a month) when we just want to channel a late 70s Jane Birkin and feel dazzling in an understated way.

Grey trench, €87 at River Island

The great thing thing about welcoming the new season is reacquainting ourselves with the fabrics generally shelved during the summer months. This blue velvet?bomber is going straight on the wishlist.

Mining the menswear department is always good for outerwear options, especially if you prefer shapes that are not so traditionally?feminine. This mustard parka packs a sartorial punch that we love.

Parka, €79.95 at Zara
