WIN a one-night stay for two adults at The Academy Hotel, Bloomsbury in London complete with Mr Ma’s Afternoon Tea.

London’s Bloomsbury has long been associated with writers, thinkers and creatives. Once the meeting place of Virginia Woolf, John Maynard Keynes and E.M. Forster, it remains a neighbourhood steeped in culture and history.

And tucked among its leafy squares and Georgian terraces is The Academy, a boutique hotel that brings this rich literary heritage to life in a stylish, contemporary way.

The Academy is situated in five Georgian townhouses that were built in 1776 and have been transformed into a 50-bedroom hotel, exuding character that is both refined and welcoming. A 2018 redesign by the award-winning Champalimaud Design studio introduced elegant interiors that nod to the Bloomsbury Set while also embracing modern townhouse living. Vintage and contemporary pieces sit side by side, creating a look that is classic yet fresh, and unmistakably Bloomsbury in spirit.

Guests are encouraged to make the hotel their own. The Lounge and Library provide spaces to unwind after a day in the city, with colourful artwork, shelves of classic literature and cosy corners perfect for reading or conversation. The Alchemy Bar, with its velvet sofas and statement lighting, offers an atmospheric spot for a pre-dinner drink, while the Courtyard Garden is a true surprise: a hidden oasis where guests can sip cocktails or enjoy an intimate afternoon tea surrounded by greenery.

Afternoon tea at The Academy is a highlight in itself. Inspired by Lao She’s novel Mr Ma and Son, Mr Ma’s Afternoon Tea blends English tradition with Asian influences, reflecting both the hotel’s cultural setting and YTL Hotels’ Malaysian heritage. Guests can expect an inventive menu that features Chinese egg tarts, sesame Jian Dui dough balls and delicate macaroons alongside the essential scones with clotted cream and strawberry preserve. The tea list spans Assam, Darjeeling and beyond, and there’s the option to add a glass of Bloomsbury Sparkling Wine or Champagne for a little extra indulgence.

Location is another of The Academy’s strengths. Just a short stroll from the British Museum, fine-dining restaurants and designer boutiques, it is as convenient for business travellers as it is for those exploring the city’s cultural landmarks. Whether staying for one night or several, solo or with company, the hotel offers the kind of boutique experience that feels personal and memorable with a blend of history, style and understated luxury.
