Prince Harry and Meghan Markle make Time 100 Most Influential People list

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have appeared on their first cover together, having been named by Time magazine among the world’s 100 most influential people.

“In a world where everyone has an opinion about people they don’t know, the duke and duchess have compassion for the people they don’t know. They don’t just opine. They run toward the struggle,” wrote José Andrés in a tribute to the couple. They have been recognised by Time magazine for their charitable works through the Archewell Foundation, and Andrés partnered with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex last year, building community centers with World Central Kitchen.

“They turn compassion into boots on the ground through their Archewell Foundation,” writes Andrés. “They give voice to the voiceless through media production. Hand in hand with nonprofit partners, they take risks to help communities in need — offering mental-health support to black women and girls in the US and feeding those affected by natural disasters in India and the Caribbean.”

Time’s 100 most influential people list is divided into six categories: artists, leaders, icons, pioneers, titans, and innovators. The Duke and Duchess were named as icons, alongside Britney Spears, tennis player Naomi Osaka, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Dolly Parton and more. Also making the Time 100 list are Billie Eilish, Simon Biles, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Lil Nas X, President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

The director-general of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iiweala, was chosen by Harry and Meghan to also make the list. “Okonjo-Iweala has shown us that the path to ending this pandemic is lit by working together to equip every nation with equitable vaccine access,” they wrote in a post on the Archewell Foundation website.
