Traffic and travel: Seven-vehicle crash on Dublin’s M50 and Irish Rail service delays on Tuesday morning
There are delays on the M50 this morning following a number of crashes. The incident happened on the M50 at Junction 9 – Red Cow in the southbound direction. Dublin Fire Brigade and emergency services are at the scene of a seven-vehicle road traffic collision. The collision has been moved to the hard shoulder and the lanes previously impacted have all reopened. There has also been another collision on the M50 at Junction 12 – Firhouse in the southbound direction and the third lane is currently affected. Irish Rail have also advised commuters travelling to Dublin that the 5.15 service from Westport to Heuston in operating approximately 20 minutes delayed due to a technical issue.

Man arrested after protesters surround Mary Lou McDonald’s car in East Wall
A man has been arrested after protesters surrounded Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald’s car in East Wall last night. McDonald was at East Wall’s Sean O’Casey Community Centre yesterday evening. Upon leaving the venue, she was accosted by protesters who shouted at her and surrounded her car. A significant number of gardaí were present and called for the crowd to back away. One man was arrested.

A number of children have escaped without injury after a petrol bomb was allegedly thrown at a house on Cork city. The incident happened at a house at Hillview Drive in Onslow Gardens on the city’s northside on Monday night.

Dublin riots: Gardaí must crack down on ‘thugs’, councillors tell commissioner
Dublin communities may form vigilante groups to protect themselves from violence unless the Garda cracks down on “thugs” and far-right extremists, councillors have told Garda Commissioner Drew Harris during a tense meeting following last week’s riot. Dublin city councillors complained Garda management had taken a “soft” approach towards the far-right and appeared to have a “policy of appeasement” towards them. Minister for Justice Helen McEntee will tell the Cabinet on Tuesday morning that she is seeking clarity on the use of force available to gardaí in dealing with serious public order incidents.

Rescuers reach trapped Indian tunnel workers
Rescuers have successfully drilled through debris to reach 41 workers trapped for 17 days in a collapsed tunnel in the Indian Himalayas. An official said they are due to start pulling the men to safety shortly. The men were stuck in the 4.5km tunnel in the mountainous state of Uttarakhand since it caved in earlier this month. The process of pulling them out, one at a time on wheeled stretchers through a pipe 90cm wide, will take a couple of hours, officials said.

Israel-Hamas war live: 33 Palestinians freed after 11 Israeli hostages released; Gaza truce extended by two days
Thirty-three Palestinians – 30 children and three women – have been released from Israeli jails following the freeing of 11 Israeli hostages from Gaza. The Israel Prison Service said the prisoners were released from Israel’s Ofer prison in the West Bank and from a detention centre in Jerusalem, bringing the total number of Palestinians it has freed since Friday to 150. Footage posted on Twitter showed crowds of Palestinians greeting the former prisoners as they arrived in the West Bank.

Australia will ban imports of disposable vapes from January, in an effort to curb nicotine addiction in children. New laws to stop single-use vapes from being made, advertised, and supplied in the country will also be introduced. It comes amid a broader push to phase out recreational vaping completely.
