‘Less traffic, greener hills, great Guinness’: Florence Pugh arrives in Wicklow

Actress Florence Pugh has arrived in Ireland to shoot a movie adaptation of Emma Donoghue's post-Famine psychological thriller The Wonder.

The Little Women star follows a list of Hollywood actors who have chosen to visit Ireland – and, as it happens, Co Wicklow – in recent months, taken in by the picturesque surroundings.

In The Wonder, set in the Irish Midlands in 1859, she plays Lib Wright, a nurse who is sent to a tiny village to observe what locals say is a miracle and medical anomaly – a girl said to have survived without food for months. The film is adapted from the 2016 novel by the same name by Irish author Emma Donoghue.

Donoghue received an Oscar nomination for another film adaptation of her work, her novel Room which won best actress for actress Brie Larson and also secured best picture and director nominations.

Pugh posted a picture of the Hollywood sign in Wicklow and shared her favourite things about the county so far: “Less traffic, greener hills, great Guinness. A different kind of Hollywood.”

Filming began on Monday – the actress shared a photo via Instagram stories – and reportedly also stars Joe Alwyn (yes, Taylor Swift’s Joe Alwyn).

For those not overly familiar with her body of work, she gained acclaim for her leading role in horror movie Midsommer before receiving an Oscar nomination for her role as Amy March in Little Women. She also starred in Black Widow opposite Scarlett Johansson and will reprise her role as Yelena Belova in the Marvel series Hawkeye.
