Organisers of Cork Ironman told event couldn’t be sanctioned – Triathlon Ireland
The organisers of a half Ironman triathlon in Co Cork in which two competitors died were told by the national governing body for triathlons that the event could not be sanctioned following a water safety assessment, Triathlon Ireland has said. The men who died have been named as 64-year-old Ivan Chittenden, from Toronto in Canada, and 45-year-old Brendan Wall, who was originally from Slane, Co Meath, but had been living in the UK for many years. They were taking part in the sea swim element of the event when they got into difficulties at Claycastle beach in Youghal on Sunday.

Gardaí in Pearse Street arrested the two males on Monday morning in relation to the investigation into a serious assault and robbery that occurred on Fownes Street Upper, Dublin 2 on the night of Friday, August 11. “A male teenage juvenile and a man (aged in his late teens) were arrested and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in Dublin. They have both since been charged.

Twelve patients were reported to have been sexually assaulted in mental health facilities overseen by the Health Service Executive (HSE) last year, according to new figures. The assaults are among more than 500 ‘serious’ adverse incidents in which it was also reported that patients died, were abducted, or had the wrong surgical procedure performed on them during 2022.

Trump says he will be arrested on Thursday in Georgia election case
Donald Trump has said he plans to turn himself in on Thursday to a court in the state of Georgia to face charges of election interference. A judge in Atlanta who is overseeing the former president’s case has set bail at $200,000 (£157,000). The agreement says Mr Trump can remain free pending trial so long as he does not attempt to threaten or intimidate witnesses. Mr Trump denies 13 charges, including racketeering and false statements.

Maui wildfires: Joe Biden visits Hawaiian island after days of criticism
Joe Biden has visited the wildfire-hit island of Maui – following days of criticism over his response to the crisis. The president and his wife, first lady Jill Biden, arrived on the Hawaiian island on Monday – 13 days after the wildfires that claimed at least 114 lives and devastated the historic town of Lahaina. After touring, the damage, he promised the federal government would help Maui “for as long as it takes” to recover from the devastation.
