Emily Blunt In Hot Water Over Comments On US Citizenship

Actress Emily Blunt recently became an American citizen after years of living and working in the country. There’s also the small fact of the former Brit’s 2010 marriage to fellow actor John Krasinski, with whom she had a baby daughter, Hazel, in February 2014.

However, the entire process did not culminate with a party involving little star-spangled banner flags atop a similarly designed iced cake. In fact, Blunt told the Hollywood Reporter she even had some regrets after watching Donald Trump, presidential hopeful, in action. “I became an American citizen recently, and that night we watched the Republican debate, and I thought, ‘This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?” she said, with a very obvious hint of sarcasm. Emily was on the Toronto International Film Festival red carpet to promote Sicario, a much-talked-about thriller in which she plays a FBI agent tackling drug trafficking along the Mexican and US border. The film, which co-stars Benicio del Toro, is getting an array of four and five star reviews at the festival, with heady Oscar talk surrounding Emily’s performance.

Some Americans did not see this as a particularly nice comment to make after the country granted Blunt a passport. When we say some Americans, we mean Republicans who sensed she was sending them a major slight. The panel on conservative chat show Fox and Friends did not appreciate The Devil Wears Prada actress? off-the-cuff statement. Host?Anna Kooiman went so far as to demand Blunt stop taking the roles of American actresses, ?Well you know what, then why don’t you leave Hollywood,?California, and let some American?women take on the roles that you’re?getting. Because Americans are watching your’movies and lining your pockets.?

Steve Doocy, a co-host on the show, agreed with Kooiman, “She has alienated half the country, that now will think twice about going to one of her movies.” Doocy then said the actress “Dixie Chick’d herself” – which is our new favourite verb. The media personality was referring to the country music band’s stance?over the Iraq War, of which they were critical. The Dixie Chick’s publicly slammed then-President George W. Bush and earned the ire of the Republican party.

Here’s hoping everyone cools their jets before they set about torpedoing Emily Blunt’s career over a joke about a ridiculous man.
