How To Mix And Match Texture

Introducing texture to your AW wardrobe isn’t difficult – a faux-fur jacket, a patent boot or a plaid skirt will do the trick. But?embracing fully the texture trend requires a little more skill, and something of an eclectic eye. Having said that, it doesn’t have to mean a riot of mismatched fabrics and weaves (in the style of Anna Dello Russo, above). There’s a subtlety to this season’s texture mash-up that makes for surprisingly elegant outfits. The women most likely to inspire are?the stars of the fashion front row, so here are a few who got the balance just right.

This is a really simple but effective clash – flirty lace with a high-neck wool sweater. Sometimes pairing complete opposites makes perfect sense of an outfit. I would have gone with an underskirt though!

This outfit is a beautiful blend of subtle textures. Patent boots, a suede skirt with studded detail, leather bag with metallic embellishment and a silk shirt. The fringed hem is also really tactile and adds depth to the whole look.

Gladiator-style heels add woven texture, while a simple wool coat is made more on trend with a faux-fur trim on each sleeve. Utilitarian denim always adds a tactile feel an outfit, while the addition of a classic tan leather belt is the perfect finishing touch. This is a’very sophisticated’mash-up.

I think this outfit is really clever. Who would have thought of pairing plaid with pastels? Anything tweedy is great for adding character to an outfit. The blue suede bag complements both coats beautifully, while the oversized ring shows a real attention to detail. I love this look.

The frayed edges of this jacket beef up the look, while the skirt offers so much in terms of texture: the differing lengths, the pleated effect and the washed out colourway. Black suede boots really anchor the look.
