The SS17 Beauty Trends: Part One

Break out the blush and overcome your beauty inhibitions. This season’s backstage make-up trends are all about vivid colour and tactile textures worn with confidence, says ROSALEEN McMEEL.

Whilst clean skin and hair were present during the SS17 shows, the beauty trends that really made an impression were brighter and bolder than ever. Colour took centre stage on the eyes and lips, with bright red pouts, glistening glitter and electric hues on the eyes all spotted backstage. Skin was pared-down, but incredibly chic. The most important message to take away from this season is that of personality. As with fashion, it’s no longer about strictly adhering to a fixed set of rules, it’s about having fun with what you’ve got. Here are the new beauty trends you can happily master at home with ease.

TOTALLY 80S

It appears Stranger Things has revived a lot more than Winona Ryder’s career. The Netflix hit is being credited with a renewed love for all things 80s, including make-up. This time around, the finish is fresher than ever; just look at the electric blue eye make-up seen backstage at Jean Paul Gaultier. For a more everywoman approach, try a blue eye tint, such as Armani’s in electric blue. Add more depth to the eyes with a shiny glossy highlight on the outer corner to achieve that distinct 1980s draping effect.

PARTING PLAITS

Grown-up plaits complemented busy patterns on the Valentino catwalk. Guido Palau styled romantic braids and added extensions for extra length. To recreate the look, hairstylist Michael Leong advises adding texture to your blow-dry with a dry shampoo (try Show Beauty Premiere Dry Shampoo, €35) and loosely pulling the hair back before plaiting it. ?Open the plait by pinching the hair out, so you get that loose, romantic finish.?

LINER REDUX

It may have taken you years to perfect, but consider putting your black cat-eye liner on hold for now. This season, eyeliner is equal parts wearable and subversive. Try brightly- coloured slashes under the lower lash line, or an upside-down cat-eye painted on. ?The graphic liner trend isn’t going anywhere,? says celebrity make-up artist Christine Lucignano, ‘so if you want to master it, make sure you have a really precise application, or you may end up looking like you did your make-up in the dark. Pick up the Savannah Miller X Bagsy Intensifying Ink Liquid Liner for foolproof graphic line work, as it has such a precise brush and a formula that doesn’t bleed and sets instantly.?
