Appearing on the programme for a very special cause, the couple was there to talk about Help – a charity album launched to raise funds for War Child, who work to provide aid to war-stricken areas.
The first time that the show stayed on air past 9 am (it ran until 9:28 am exactly), it was originally only supposed to be Kate and a group of her supermodel friends (one of which was Naomi Campbell). Host Gaby Roslin saw her chance though and put Moss on the spot, asking her if Johnny would pop on for a quick chat too.
Making his entrance in true Hollywood style, Depp walked on set and immediately sprawled himself across the double bed where the models were lounging. “It’s a golden opportunity,” he joked.
Reportedly inspired by the concept behind John Lennon’s Instant Karma – the general idea of which was that records should be released as soon as they’re recorded – the whole thing came together in just a matter of days. All of the songs were recorded across a single day, and the album features vocals/instrumentals from famous artists such as Paul McCartney, Paul Weller, Radiohead, Oasis, Blur and the Manic Street Preachers amongst others.
“I think it’s amazing,” Depp said of the album, “you try and help in any way you can.” “The charity distributes money to other agencies which take food and set up medical supplies – medical, social and food is basically what they’re trying to get together down there,” Kate explained. Both he and Moss feature on the Oasis-led track “Fade Away”; him on guitar and her on tambourine.
Also touching on the paparazzi’s interest in their relationship, Depp smiled as he compared them to mosquitoes. “They’re very good [at following us],” he commented. “Subtlety is right out the window,” he continued. Kate agreed, saying that it didn’t necessarily annoy her because “they don’t really know anything, they just presume.” As Depp put it – “it makes for very good fiction, some very interesting stories”.
Together for four years, the couple eventually parted ways for good in 1998. However, there has been renewed interest in their relationship after Moss took the stand during court proceedings between Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard.
