When I was growing up, there were always two tall golden candle holders on either side of the mantlepiece in our good sitting room. They were rarely lit, the deep red candles continuing to stand tall throughout the year, until they were sparked up come Christmas time.

Over the years, I seem to have adopted the opposite approach. I stuff candles into empty wine bottles scattered around my room or on the windowsill, taking great pleasure in watching the wax trickle down the sides and collect at the base.
