It’s hands down the best show on television, and as a trailer for the latest instalment of the HBO series drops, we take a look at the upcoming season as the family continue to circle a the meaty morsel of the C.E.O. role in Waystar Royco, the right-wing media conglomerate run by his father.
If it sounds familiar, that’s because the show, which premiered in 2018, has been compared to the real-life struggles of media mogul Rupert Murdock. Succession, is a tragedy-satire of the corporate élite and was created by the British comedy writer Jesse Armstrong who says any comparisons are purely coincidently.
The show revolves around the question of who will succeed Logan, a fearsome Rupert Murdoch-like mogul who closes roughly seventy per cent of his interactions with his catch-phrase; “Fuck off!”
Kendall is the hair apparent, but as the seasons progress, it seems as if his siblings are planing to give him a run for his money. Shiv, played beautifully by Sarah Snook is a shrewd political advisor, Roman a nihilist and the eldest Roy sibling is Connor, a foolish libertarian.
Tom Wambsgans, Shiv’s husband is out for a piece of the pie too along with blunder-prone Cousin Greg who provides the comic relief to balance the pithy strategic exchanges.
The latest trailer for the upcoming season which is due to be released in Spring 2023 shows the Roy siblings forming a type of ‘rebel alliance’ to take down their father and stop Lukas Matsson taking over the family company.
At the end of Season three, we learn that Kendall, Shiv, Roman and Connor’s mother -has left them powerless over the future of the company.
Now the knives are out as the power-hungry foursome try to win back some control. But can they trust one another?
The official logline for Season 4 reads: “The sale of media conglomerate Waystar Royco to tech visionary Lukas Matsson moves ever closer. The prospect of this seismic sale provokes existential angst and familial division among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will look like once the deal is completed. A power struggle ensues as the family weighs up a future where their cultural and political weight is severely curtailed.”
We also know it will be 10 episodes long. In an interview in August, Kieran Culkin said the fourth season feels a little different. He says that while the first episode feels like “the show again,” the next couple of episodes “actually kind of [feel] different. Which is great,” Culkin continued. “It’s like it’s a great different. It’s like not resting on its laurels or whatever. It’s still very much the show, but it feels like it’s going in a direction that I did not anticipate.”
On NBC’s red carpet broadcast at the Emmy Awards, Sarah Snook teased what fans can expect from the fourth season: “More drama. What else can the Roys provide?” And “super-high stakes.
Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, said in a statement; “With each season of Succession, [creator] Jesse Armstrong has continued to surpass our wildest expectations, pulling us deeper into the Roy family’s inner sanctum with indelible wit, humanity, and precision. This season is undoubtedly no exception, and we couldn’t be more excited for all that’s in store in this next season ahead.”
News about a possible drop date is due soon. With write Armstrong revealing that there will also be some scenes filmed overseas; “we’re obviously shooting abroad, we’re working on a broad canvas, I won’t get into what we’re going to do.”
But be in now doubt that by all accounts, the series will continue to be study of the unquenchable human thirst for domination.
