These properties vary in the amount of work they need, but each has great potential for someone looking for a picturesque rural home.

If you’re in the market for a rural home and you don’t need a huge property, then a cottage is a great option. They are usually a very manageable size, whilst also coming with the kind of character that’s impossible to recreate in a new build.

Although they usually come to the market in a slightly dated condition, this only offers the opportunity to finish the home to your exact taste, as well as improving your chances of securing a bargain. Here are four cottages for sale in Co Cork that are on the market for €170,000 and under.

Tay Road Carrignafoy, Cobh, €170,000

This lovely stone cottage is less than five minutes’ drive from the popular town of Cobh. Although a new owner may wish to update it, it is in good condition, and has an entrance porch, living room, kitchen, bathroom, and two bedrooms on the first floor.

The rooms have features like exposed stone walls and a stove in the living space, while the home sits on 1.3 acres of land, offering the potential for expansion, subject to planning permission.

Drishanebeg, Tragumna, Skibbereen, €170,000

It may look small from the outside, but this cottage actually has three bedrooms, and sits on half an acre of land, with wonderful views. Situated just a short walk from Tragumnas blue flag beach, it’s also close to Skibbereen and all its amenities.

Again, the interiors will need to be updated. There is also a spiral staircase to the first floor, which may be a challenge for some, but a reconfiguration could solve this issue.

Dysart, Dripsey, €135,000

Although currently looking a little unloved, this cottage could be charming with some work. It has two bedrooms, and, unusually for a cottage, both are en suite.

There is a mature garden surrounding the house, which features a garage and potting shed, perfect for anyone with green fingers. It’s also just half an hour from Cork city, so you have the benefits of a rural location with the convenience of the city close by.

Pluckanes North, Donoughmore, €100,000

This quaint property is the cheapest on our list, as it is need of complete renovation to make it habitable. However, with its stone walls and traditional style, it could be a dream project for someone willing to take on a challenge.

The property also comes with a large stone outbuilding, which has the potential to be converted into additional accommodation if planning permission allowed. Also just 30 minutes from Cork and 20 minutes from Mallow, it would give easy access to shops and services.
