Ahead of its season two premiere, a new mural is set to be created in Derry city centre in honour of the hugely popular Channel 4 sitcom Derry Girls.

Channel 4 has teamed up with a Derry-based social change group UV Arts to produce the mural, which will feature Erin, Orla, Clare, Michelle and James to promote the new season of the show. The mural will be painted onto the side of the Badger’s Bar in Derry’s city centre.

Speaking to the Derry Journal about the announcement, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Councillor John Boyle said there had been “great anticipation” for the second season of Derry Girls, and that “this artwork is a real tribute to the cast which will no doubt be really well received by fans.

“I am delighted to see the ongoing success of the show, which has shone a spotlight on the city, our culture and our humour, and helped raise the profile of Northern Ireland to an international audience,” he added.

Derry Girls first aired in 2018 on Channel 4 to rave reviews from both English and Irish viewers, and it became the channel’s most-watched comedy in 14 years. The show is now available on Netflix (except in the UK and Ireland, where you can watch it on All4).

‘It’s about my experiences’

The programme is the brainchild of writer and Derry native Lisa McGee. Speaking to Irish News about the show last year, she said “I love writing about Derry. I love that it’s about my experiences, my family and friends and that I’ve been given the opportunity to put the lives of people from there on screen.

“I’m privileged and proud that people all over the UK are now saying our sayings,” she added.

We still don’t know the date of release for Derry Girls season two, but reports suggest it will air in early March.
