It doesn’t matter who you are; everyone is entitled to their private life. A time in which to experience moments of tenderness and joy without prying eyes around. And it isn’t important that celebrities, for example,’might be the biggest stars in the world; their ‘status? in the industry gives no one the right to take such moments away. The grossly unjust celebrity nude photo leak last summer brought about this conversation, and a call from those affected to bring in genuine legislation to protect others from what actress Jennifer Lawrence was a victim of, in her words, ?a sexual crime.?
Today, Gigi Hadid reportedly took steps to prevent a similar occurrence happening, as TMZ reports that the model contacted the authorities as she was being ?blackmailed by hackers.?
According to multiple reports, hackers have allegedly stolen “private” photos and videos from the 20-year-old’s iCloud account and are threatening to release them online and sell them to media outlets unless she pays them a substantial amount.
Hadid, however, is refusing to succumb to the demands and is reportedly working with law enforcement and private investigators to identify the blackmailers and charge them.
It’s still unclear how Hadid’s account was hacked, but the important thing is that she is taking steps to see that the perpetrators are brought to justice. By her actions receiving media attention, this will bring the conversation of legislation back into the public eye once again. Why should anyone, celebrity or not, have to worry about the possibility of total strangers glimpsing at their most personal moments and worse, ensuring the entire world can see them? The very concept of such happenings is appalling.
Even at this early stage, the hack appears to be eerily reminiscent of last year’s massive photo hack. Among the victims were Kirsten Dunst, Kate Upton, and as mentioned above, Jennifer Lawrence, who spoke publicly about the scandal.
Her words on the subject hit the nail on the head: ?It is a sexual violation. It’s disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change. That’s why these websites are responsible? Just the fact that somebody can be sexually exploited and violated and the first thought that crosses somebody’s mind is to make a profit from it.?
